What is FTP?

What is FTP ?

How does it work?

VUB/ULB users can also create their own directory surrounded by /pub/exchange. To do so, they have to login on ftp.vub.ac.be or ftp.ulb.ac.be by telnet, using their own username/netid and password, and contained by the MACH menu select 'w' and then 'f' to create this personal directory. Why not use e-mail for file verbs?
It is true that e-mail is very undemanding to use. And with a mouseclick you can convey and receive attachments by e-mail.
However, a lot of servers waste e-mails that are larger that a certain size. For instance, the maximum size of an e-mail message sent to or from the VUB/ULB is 16 million bytes (15.25 Mbytes). And other providers even encroach more restrictive limits (sometimes even as low as 300 kbytes).
Also documents that are sent by e-mail own to be encoded in some mode, making the document even larger (about one third). So a document that is 7.5 Mbytes sizeable would become 10 Mbytes when sent by e-mail.

FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol. It's a system that let's you upload your files from your computer to the internet. If you have a domain, you must cause a FTP account. If you are hosted, your host should e-mail you the FTP login information for you to hold access to your files. It's much easier than uploading things one by one and takes a long time to upload it onto your site. I suggest you to use smartFTP. You can download it at http://smartFTP.com. Here's how to use it: 1. Go to Site>>New Site and type surrounded by the host address (yourhostssite.com), login username and password that you are given. 2. The port should always stay at 21 at adjectives times. 3.Add your site to the General tab and click ok. 4. Then, you should see the cgi.bin and ftpquota. Ignore those. 5. If you are coming from freewebs, go to your freewebs tale and right click each page, select Save Target As, and salvage it onto and make sure you put .html after the page moniker. 6. After you saved adjectives of the pages, form the folders of each passage of where respectively page is going to be in. Drag the report and drop it into the right folder and it should upload. 7. Always use Notepad to update your site. Very helpful. 8. And you're done. If you are editing your page, repeat steps 6 and 7. 9. If you are having trouble near your FTP login, contact your host and they'll give you another FTP login info.
