I'm going to surprise myself here and come out against OMG in my belief. If you are accustomed to using an SLR, I'd suggest the A640. It still gives you the option of shutter priority, aperture priority and manual focus. It seem that these would be hard to impart up if you are an SLR photographer. It has bigger chalice in the lens, more telephoto make, more pixels and a bigger sensor. It does not require Canon's proprietary batteries, but can use any "AA" within a pinch. (Energizer e2 Lithium are the best choice for non-rechargeable.) It has a flip-out and verbs LCD monitor, which is pretty cool for novel photographic positions as you can hold the camera overhead, on the ground or over your shoulder, should you choose to use the monitor as a viewfinder.
Compactness is one consideration, but I'd enunciate that giving up almost all control which you are accustomed to have is a much bigger consideration. You decide.
Those are adjectives good choices.
I'd intuitively favor the 850 IS.
The 850 IS is pretty much the same as the 900 but you don't payment extra for 10 megapixels when the lens can't resolve more than 7 or 8 anyway (these point & shoot models don't exactly use Canon L lenses). With the 850 IS you also get more far-reaching angle.
And I'd favor either of these models over the 640. Since this is going to be your camera for occasion when you don't want to lug the SLR around, compactness is a big feature. You can slide the 850 or 900 within any pocket with take the edge off but the 640 is a tad bigger and heavier.
An alternative to the Canons, and a camera that I'm personally considering as a backup, is the FujiFilm F30 (or the newer F31). This model is specifically good at giant ISO settings. This is useful to me, because night on the town is one time when I'd rather set out the dSLR at home / at the hotel.
Here's a review: http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/fujifilm...
I have a canon 30D and a canon 5D. I elected the new canon G7 for my compact camera because it have all of the flexibility and controls as my SLR's (sorry no raw) and a flash port so that I can still use my external flash approaching the 580ex and pocket wizard to fire studio strobes.
It is no the smallest, but it is build like a cistern.
